Joseph M. Coney, M.D.

Dr. Joseph M. Coney joined Retina Associates of Cleveland in July 2006. He received his BS degree in biology from the University of Illinois and his MD degree from Loyola-Stritch School of Medicine. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals of Cleveland, where he is now a senior clinical instructor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. He finished a medical retina fellowship at the Joslin Diabetes Clinic of Harvard Medical School and a vitreoretinal surgical fellowship at the Vitreoretinal Foundation.

Dr. Coney is on the Board of Directors of the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland and is secretary of the Cleveland Ophthalmological Society. He serves as the ophthalmology section secretary and an executive committee member in the National Medical Association (NMA), and he is the cocounselor of the NMA for the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). Dr. Coney was nominated by his peers to participate in the Leadership Development Program sponsored by the AAO. He is also a member of the American Eye Study Club and the American Society of Retinal Specialists.

Dr. Coney is Board-certified in ophthalmology and manages a wide spectrum of medical and surgical retinal diseases. His special interests are intraocular lasers, retinal detachment, and vitreoretinal surgery. His interest in clinical research, particularly in new medical and surgical management of advanced diabetic retinopathy, macular edema, and age-related macular degeneration, has led him to be a clinical investigator in more than 35 clinical trials. He actively authors scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals and lectures locally, nationally, and internationally.
