Apthera™ IOL Cataract Implant

What Is the Apthera™ IOL?

The Acufocus IC-8 Apthera™ IOL (intraocular lens) is an advanced lens replacement that corrects blurry vision in cataract patients with low-level astigmatism. This artificial lens implantation replaces the eye’s natural lens which has become clouded over time, causing vision to blur. The Apthera™ IOL is an intraocular cataract treatment, meaning it occurs inside the eye rather than on its surface.

How Does It Work?

Equipped with small aperture technology, this minimally invasive vision correction procedure improves near, intermediate, and distance vision by filtering out unfocused light and redirecting focused light to the retina.

Who Does It Benefit, & When Should It Be Used?

The Apthera™ IOL benefits patients with cataracts who have low-level astigmatism, which is a small curvature of the cornea. Patients who need surgery to correct their blurry vision but don’t qualify for alternative vision correction procedures—like LASIK or PRK—should consider this treatment option.

Patients who should not consider the Apthera™ IOL include those who:

  • Have a retinal disease
  • Are at risk of developing a retinal disease, whether due to family history or another reason
  • Have pupils that cannot dilate adequately

Understanding Cataracts

Cataracts is an age-related vision condition in which the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy, causing your vision to blur. It’s a natural progression of the aging process and is most common in adults over age 40. The Apthera™ IOL improves cataracts by removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with a permanent, artificial lens to restore clear vision.

Apthera™ IOL FAQs

How is the Apthera™ IOL different from other lens replacement options?

While traditional monofocal IOLs only restore vision at one focal point—typically distance—the Apthera™ IOL restores near, intermediate, and distance vision. As a result, a patient’s need for prescription glasses, bifocals, and contacts is either reduced or eliminated.

When can I resume normal activities?

Most of our patients who undergo Apthera™ IOL surgery can resume normal activities after just a few days. However, every patient is different. Your doctor will be able to set the most accurate recovery expectations.

What can I expect from the recovery process?

We will prescribe medicated eye drops to aid the healing process and eliminate any pain or discomfort after surgery.

Will I still need glasses or contacts after the procedure?

While you may still need prescription glasses or contacts to see clearly, your reliance upon them will be significantly reduced compared to other lens implants.

How do I know if I qualify for the Apthera™ IOL?

Preexisting retinal disease and other serious eye conditions can increase the risk of complications and prevent a patient from qualifying for the Apthera™ IOL. Before creating a customized treatment plan, we will perform a comprehensive eye exam to determine whether you’re a candidate for this treatment.

What risks should I be aware of?

The Apthera™ IOL procedure is associated with certain risks, just like any other surgery. Potential risks include:

  1. Glare
  2. Rings and flashes of light
  3. Starbursts
  4. Faded colors
  5. Blurry vision
  6. Double vision
  7. Poor night vision

If you have concerns about any of the above complications, don’t hesitate to discuss them with your doctor. Complications may result in the need for a secondary procedure to achieve the desired visual results.
