Oculoplastics refers to a type of restorative surgery performed around the eye. Oculoplastic surgery can be performed for medical reasons, cosmetic reasons, or both. Let’s focus on the medical uses for oculoplastic surgery. Medical oculoplastic surgery encompasses a wide range of surgeries. Medical oculoplastic surgery can be performed to repair the eyelids, eye sockets, tear ducts, cheeks.
Droopy Eyelids, Lower Eyelid Bags & Excess Eyelid Skin
Droopy eyelids are extremely common with age; however, some patients experience vision problems when eyelids droop too much. Drooping upper eyelids can eventually obstruct vision while drooping lower eyelids can cause discomfort and dryness. Lower eyelid bags can also become troublesome after a certain amount of time. A common oculoplastic procedure, called a blepharoplasty, is performed to correct these issues. During a blepharoplasty, your surgeon makes an incision in either the lower or upper eyelid to manipulate the amount of fat, or in the eyelid crease to reduce excess skin.
Styes, Chalazion & Eyelid Tumors
The oculoplastic surgeon is who you go to when you have an eyelid growth or infection that cannot be treated in a non-surgical method. Some styes and chalazion go away on their own after a certain period of time and care. Sometimes, they worsen to the point where they will not go down on their own. If you have a stye or chalazion that is very swollen and red for more than a few days, it’s best to make an appointment with your eye doctor.
Ectropion & Entropion
Eyelids that turn inward are called entropion, and those that turn outwards are referred to as ectropion. Both of these conditions can cause corneal damage and discomfort. The only way to fix these issues is through blepharoplasty.
Tear Duct Problems
Excessive tearing? You may have a blocked tear duct. Some cases of tear duct blockage are not serious enough to require surgery. However, when other methods of unblocking don’t work, or if the tear duct becomes clogged many times, it may be time for surgery.
Blepharospasm is associated with abnormal function of the part of the brain responsible for controlling the muscles. BOTOX® has been proven to reduce the effects of blepharospasm temporarily, although it is not a cure. BOTOX® works by paralyzing the muscle for a period of time.
